Last fall, on a site visit to the North Atlantic Carpenters training center in Boston with the Committee on Labor and Workforce Development, we talked with today’s Rosie (named Lilah) about women in the trades and Rosie the Riveter. She wanted women to get the message that the trades are a good place for women to work.
Rosie showed women they could work in the trades in World War II. Our unfortunate history is that women were squeezed out of these jobs after the war, but Rosie shows us that women can do the jobs!
The unions are working to create more diversity in their ranks and encourage women to apply. As we hear about shortages in the trades, we need to draw from the deep pool of women who can work in these fields.
Massachusetts Girls in Trades is holding conferences and career fairs this fall. This is good timing if you are considering applying to a union like Plumbers and Gasfitters Local 12 with apprenticeship training applications open in January. Or you can go to info sessions held by the unions throughout the year!
The Carpenters have info sessions on joining the union and learning a trade on the first Mondays of each month.
